Dermal fillers are a type of cosmetic injectable used to enhance and rejuvenate the appearance of the skin by adding volume, smoothing out wrinkles, and filling in areas that have lost volume due to aging or other factors. One common type of dermal filler is made from hyaluronic acid (HA). At The Cosmedic House, we use HA fillers as they are deemed as the safest due to being able to dissolve them in the case of any complications.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body, particularly in the skin, connective tissues, and eyes. It plays a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration and volume. However, as we age, the body's natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases, leading to the formation of wrinkles, lines, and a loss of facial volume. Dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid are used to counteract these effects.

Here's how hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work:

  1. Injection: A healthcare provider or trained medical professional injects the hyaluronic acid filler into specific areas of the face, such as the lips, cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds (smile lines), and marionette lines (lines around the mouth).

  2. Volume Enhancement: Hyaluronic acid filler instantly adds volume to the treated area, plumping up the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines. It can also be used to enhance facial contours.

  3. Hydration: Hyaluronic acid has the ability to attract and retain water, which helps improve skin hydration and overall texture.

  4. Temporary Results: The results of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are temporary and typically last anywhere from several months to a year or more, depending on the specific product used and individual factors. Over time, the body gradually absorbs the hyaluronic acid, so repeat treatments are often necessary to maintain the desired results.

Some common brand names for hyaluronic acid fillers include Texoane, Vivacy, Belotero, Revanesse,  among others. These products come in various formulations designed for different areas of the face and specific treatment goals.

It's important to note that dermal filler injections should be performed by qualified healthcare professionals to ensure safety and achieve the desired aesthetic results. Additionally, potential risks and side effects, such as swelling, bruising, and redness at the injection site, should be discussed with a healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.

How long does dermal filler last?

This is dependent on the area treated and the filler used. With lip filler, our patients have found that after 2-3 sessions of building them up with small amounts, it lasts for over 12 months. For other areas of the face such as cheeks and chin, filler can last up to 18 months. There are other external factors that influence the longevity of filler also including whether you smoke, use sunbeds, exercise, have a fast metabolism etc.

Do you use cannula or needle?

This is dependent on the area that is being treated and the individual. Where possible, we like to use cannula as it is less traumatic. However, needles offer precision. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.

We provide topical numbing for 15-20 minutes prior to injecting. Our patients find that the pain is minimal.
